Universal & Accessible Bathrooms

A universal bathroom does not have to look like a public utility but can merge stylishly into your home interior.

Future-proofing a “nicely” designed bathroom for current usage but looking forward to possible restrictions of aging and other disability is acknowledged by Coriander Design’s universal bathroom and partnership with Lifemark.
In New Zealand, many bathrooms are “the small room” in the house. However, if consideration is given to door width and accessibility to toilet, shower, grab rails, etc, at an early stage in design then it is possible to make provision for these necessities and still retain the comfort and presentation of a modern home.
A bathroom renovation is also the opportunity to plan ahead. Many of these universal access improvements are possible at minimal increase to the renovation cost. They just need recognition at the time of the redesign of the bathroom and toilet facility.

The design of an accessible bathroom requires an understanding of:

  • the practical difficulties of each disabled user
  • the building code requirements (if applicable) and
  • the bathroom products which are suitable for disabled users.

Putting this together so that the bathroom is a pleasurable place for all people to use is the expertise of Coriander Design.

The need for an accessible bathroom can occur when least expected. This is often a time of stress and unexpected cost. Our experience in bathroom design and project management allows us to rapidly assess a workable solution that can be reached within the physical and budget restraints that exist.

A cheap upgrade of a bathroom product is not usually the best solution for all users of an accessible bathroom. It has to be functional for the disabled user and the rest of the household which usually requires a little extra design consideration than a conventional bathroom renovation. This is where we come in.
